Several other agencies will provide assistance to APD during the World Cup for mounted patrol units.
ATLANTA — The Atlanta Police Department on Thursday offered a glimpse at how its Mounted Patrol Unit will play a central role in World Cup crowd management security.
“Think about when I get on this horse, I am 10 feet tall,” said Lt. Greg Lyon, commander of the Mounted Patrol Unit. “Imagine a lifeguard in his chair sitting above a pool: He’s able to see everything. When Drifter (Lt. Lyon’s horse) and I are in a crowd of people, or we’re going into a really congested area, parking lots, we can see over the cars, we can see over everybody’s head.
“It gives us a great vantage point to identify problems and respond to them.”
Lt. Lyon said APD will primarily get assistance during the World Cup from the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office mounted unit. They’ll also get supplemental reinforcement from the police departments in Memphis and Savannah.
At its peak, those agencies will have a mounted force of over two dozen horses at a time. Their main zones of oversight will be the World Cup festivity areas in downtown that include the Georgia World Congress Center, Mercedes-Benz Stadium and Centennial Olympic Park.
Lt. Lyon said they’re in the final stages of “developing plans how to patrol in the event space.”
“World Cup crowds, especially tourists and visitors, they see us as this big, bold, beautiful presence,” he said Thursday. “Our main goal is to simply be ambassadors of the city, be able to help people get where they need to go.”
