Viktor & Rolf Spring 2026 Couture Runway, Fashion Show & Collection Review

There’s a particular magic to couture that makes a garment more than the sum of its fabric parts. Just take Cinderella, which Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren recently dressed in doll format.

For their spring collection, the Dutch design duo expressed that moment of transformation in a performance. “We don’t like to be on stage,” confessed Snoeren. “But there’s nothing like building something.”

What they had in mind was a kite, an object with the shoulders to carry at once a feeling of lightheartedness, cheer and freedom.

“It’s an idea that we’ve been playing really for years, but never really found a way to execute it, neither technically nor conceptually,” said Horsting before the show. “Then this season, we managed to make it work and it also felt right to try and do something that’s uplifting.”

Given the news cycle and general state of the world, who’d fault them?

As is par for the course in the Viktor & Rolf world, the kite they went for wasn’t an old easy-to-fly nylon version. Their first model, taking place on a plinth in a belted white minidress with a high collar and hair that had something of the leather aviator helmet, served as the foundation and central figure of the project.

In her wake came a succession of off-kilter silhouettes cut from black materials — duchesse satin, cloqué fabric, you name it — that all had a colorful element.

Removing them turned the all-black outfit into what Horsting described as “grounded, sculptural” and “a wearable proposition.”

On a blousy gown with poet sleeves, it was a yellow honeycomb garter that held its hem up on one side. A ruffle-necked sack dress was hidden under a pastel floor-length chiffon with a pleated hem. A disquieting hooded figure even turned into a classically beautiful gown, delicate row of buttons at the back and all.

It was among the looks that spoke the strongest of the idea that small changes might bring back a reassuring normalcy. But layer enough of them and you might find yourself transformed into a colorful creature free to soar.
