The Formula Behind Nicole Kidman’s ‘Practical Magic’ Hair Color

If ever there were a film character to win witchiest hair, it would be Gillian Owens, the complicated, free-spirited younger sister, played by Nicole Kidman in “Practical Magic.”

Her aesthetic, which is still being praised 28 years after the movie premiered, acts as a harbinger of the chaos she causes, accidentally killing her abusive boyfriend with the help of her older sister, Sally, played by Sandra Bullock.

A striking mix of auburn and copper tones, the color is far from the wash Kidman keeps today, not to mention the tone she sports in “Practical Magic 2,” out Sept. 11.

“There are two different Gillian reds,” explained Kristina Maccaro, colorist and owner of Love Lane Salon. The 1998 hue is warm. “It isn’t one flat color,” added Adir Abergel, Kidman’s longtime hairstylist. “It has copper and cinnamon woven through a deeper auburn base.”

The new color is the aged version. “It’s more of a gold copper blond,” said Maccaro. “[Kidman’s] a natural redhead who’s been blond for years, so that color is basically sitting where her hair already wants to be. That’s the whole trick. It’s also why the exact same formula won’t look like that on someone whose natural color is brunette or blond.”

That said, for anyone interested in achieving her fiery aesthetic for fall, Abergel said it’s best not to ask for a specific formula. “Bring a photo and talk about your undertone,” the artist suggested. “Cooler, rosier skin tones tend to look best in a true blue-red auburn; if you’re warmer or more golden, lean into a coppery strawberry-red instead. It should be built for your coloring, not copied off someone else’s.”

Moe Harb, cofounder of Beauty Club London, agreed. “I wouldn’t create this color using one formula from the roots all the way through to the ends,” Harb told WWD. “The beauty is in the variation. I’d keep a little more natural depth through the root, establish that beautiful copper-red through the body of the hair and then introduce very fine, lighter golden-copper pieces through selected areas of the mids and ends. Around the hairline, I’d bring in a touch more brightness because those pieces catch the light and illuminate the face.”

It’s also important to note that red hair dye fades extremely fast. “Faster than almost any other color, because the molecules don’t hold in the hair shaft the way ash tones do,” Abergel continued. But a maintenance plan can help prolong the color. These routines typically involve the use of color-depositing shampoo, washing the hair with lukewarm water and getting a gloss every few weeks. “I’m also a big believer in keeping color-treated hair on a gentle, sulfate-free routine — I use Virtue Labs on my clients because it’s formulated to protect the hair without stripping vibrancy. That’s how you keep it looking rich instead of chasing it,” Abergel added.

Looking ahead to fall, beauty insiders are already theorizing cinnamon and spiced auburn transformations will rule the season. With this, hair artist Cody Renegar predicted a burgeoning affinity for “deep chocolate browns and creamy beige blonds,” along with the continued rise of “espresso melt,” a color technique that involves blending dark roots with subtle highlights.

PakarPBN

A Private Blog Network (PBN) is a collection of websites that are controlled by a single individual or organization and used primarily to build backlinks to a “money site” in order to influence its ranking in search engines such as Google. The core idea behind a PBN is based on the importance of backlinks in Google’s ranking algorithm. Since Google views backlinks as signals of authority and trust, some website owners attempt to artificially create these signals through a controlled network of sites.

In a typical PBN setup, the owner acquires expired or aged domains that already have existing authority, backlinks, and history. These domains are rebuilt with new content and hosted separately, often using different IP addresses, hosting providers, themes, and ownership details to make them appear unrelated. Within the content published on these sites, links are strategically placed that point to the main website the owner wants to rank higher. By doing this, the owner attempts to pass link equity (also known as “link juice”) from the PBN sites to the target website.

The purpose of a PBN is to give the impression that the target website is naturally earning links from multiple independent sources. If done effectively, this can temporarily improve keyword rankings, increase organic visibility, and drive more traffic from search results.
